Urinary Tract Infections - Symptoms, Treatment, Homeopathic Remedies
Using Homeopathy for Urinary Tract Infections (UTI)
Urinary tract infections (UTIs) occur anywhere in the bladder, kidney, ureters, or urethra. Generally, the higher up in the tract an infection occurs, the more serious it is. So an infection affecting the kidneys (pyelonephritis) usually involves fever and chills, nausea and vomiting, and other strong symptoms - and can become a very serious condition if not treated promptly - whereas an infection involving the bladder (cystitis) or urethra (urethritis) generally has milder symptoms.
UTIs are quite common, with about 7 million people in the U.S. visiting doctors and medical facilities each year to deal with them. They are substantially more common in women than men, with approximately 40% of all females experiencing a UTI some time in life versus only 12% of males. Children are also susceptible, though not as much as adults, and such infections can be a serious problem in the young.
UTIs are usually caused by Escherichia coli (E.Coli) - bacteria that reside in the bowels and anus - which migrate to the opening of the urethra, resulting from sexual relations or poor hygiene, and travel upwards internally. People at increased risk include very sexually active women, pregnant women, people with compromised immune systems, and men with enlarged prostate glands.
Symptoms of cystitis may include frequent urination, pain or burning during urination (dysuria), cloudy, foul-smelling or bloody urine, lower abdominal pain, and occasionally a mild fever. Symptoms of Pyelonephritis might also include a significant fever (above 101o F), chills, nausea/vomiting, and pain in the flank area (waist level, on the back or side). A urinalysis is usually sufficient to determine if a patient has a UTI.
Conventional Treatment Treats the Symptoms Not the Cause
Conventional medical treatment is usually to prescribe antibiotics for 3-14 days, depending on the severity of the infection. In serious cases, IVs may be administered or hospitalization ordered.
Homeopathy Matches Your Individual Symptoms to a Homeopathic Remedy So You Feel Better Right Away
Among "alternative," integrative treatments, a well-known aid in preventing UTIs in women is drinking unsweetened cranberry juice, which seems to have the effect of reducing the bacteria's adhesion to bladder cells.
Homeopathy treats the whole person, not just the presenting symptoms or disease, so the selection of remedy is based on a multitude of factors, including of course those specific to the acute syndrome. The nature of the urine and location of pain are important considerations, but so too are overall constitutional attributes. A skilled homeopath will choose a remedy that will lessen the symptoms of a UTI, reduce their frequency, and redress any underlying imbalances so recurrences are less likely.
Homeopathic remedies that are used to treat UTIs include Apis mellifica, Apocynum cannabinum, Berberis vulgaris, Digitalis purpurea, Equisetum hyemale, Mercurius corrosives, and Pareira brava.
